Long before there were any online parenting matching services, creative and open-minded souls found their own way to the same solution. In 1991, Rachel Hope had baby Jesse with her close friend and coworker, who was eighteen years older than her. He did most of the childcare; she provided most of the income. They both pursued their own romantic interests.46
Rachel was delighted with her parenting partnership experience. “I get all the benefits of being married, but I didn’t have all the weather patterns of sexual-romantic destabilization.”47 In 2009, she had another child, Grace, with another man. As of 2013, she and Grace’s dad were sharing “separate wings of a rented house, with Grace shuttling happily between them.”48
Rachel has Carmel Sullivan’s arms-wide-open approach to living with other people. For a while, her best friend also moved in, and Rachel is looking for more people to join them. Her ideal living arrangement would be what she calls “tribal parenting,” in which many adults live close to one another and raise a number of children together.49
Parenting partners do not always live together. Apryll, who lives in Los Angeles, wanted to have a baby by the time she was thirty, so she had Cheyenne with her best friend, Charlie. Later, she met her husband, Damian, and she now lives with him and Cheyenne. Charlie lives twelve miles away. Apryll and Charlie still talk nearly every day, and the four of them often socialize together.50
